The game cuts away to a dramatic transformation scene, where your little Bakugan balls morph from funny little plastic monsters into full-blown, straight-from-the-anime creatures of intimidating proportion. But if one of your Bakugan ends up on the same card as one of your opponent's, you know what happens - monster battle. Three cards claimed wins the overall match, and landing two of your own Bakugan on a card wins it for you right out. But here it works pretty well, as you can be a bit more strategic about your ultimate placement - you can maneuver your Bakugan to end up landing and transforming on top of one of you own cards, or one of your enemy's. That's different from the physical game, of course, as there's no way to alter your ball's trajectory after launching it in the real world.

The ball then bounces into play, ricocheting off obstacles, spinning off speed-boosters and collecting floating upgrade items scattered all around - and, all the while, you can continue to influence the direction and speed of the sphere with repeated stylus swipes. You select one of your Bakugan, it appears on the touch screen, and you send it soaring into the battle arena with a quick flick of the stylus straight up. The gameplay here takes it cue from the physical game, but then takes some creative liberties that make the whole process a bit more interactive and energetic. Nintendo, too, must realize the power of the franchise - placing it in lofty company next to Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars and other major third-party projects there on the show floor. I got the chance to spend some time with the Nintendo DS edition of the upcoming Bakugan: Battle Brawlers video game at last week's E3, where it was one of a select few third-party titles chosen to have display space in Nintendo's own booth. It was only a matter of time before the Bakugan video game.

There's a Bakugan movie in the works, too.
BAKUGAN BATTLE BRAWLERS BALLS SERIES
The physical game is just the beginning, though, as Bakugan naturally has a lock on all the other avenues for invading kids' attention spans - like the long-running and popular animated series of the same name on Cartoon Network. It's a fun little gimmick to see in person, and you can get a sense of why young boys are so crazy for the game - it combines the monster-ownership qualities of Pokemon with the rewarding physicality of marbles, and tops the whole thing off with the same one-toy-becomes-a-different-toy appeal that's made Transformers such a lasting success over the years.

Then, if your shot is successful, the magnet hidden inside your Bakugan ball will trigger, releasing a little spring mechanism that "transforms" the ball into a small monster toy on the spot. You have these little plastic balls that you roll out into a circular area in-between you and your opponent, trying to get them to come to a rest on top of metallic cards that have been laid face-down in the space. If you're not familiar with the series, here's the elevator pitch - Bakugan is essentially a combination of Pokemon's monster-battling concept with the traditional, tangible game of marbles. Luckily, for the thousands (and perhaps millions) of boys and girls who receive the video game version as a gift this holiday season, they'll also be getting a solid gameplay design to back up that brand power. It's going to sell through the roof on name alone. The next week I was at a birthday party for Kyle, the son of two more friends, and his myriad other presents were unceremoniously cast aside when he opened his new Bakugan - immediately summoning both the awe and jealousy of all the other kids in attendance.ĭan,+Shun+and+others+from+the+show+will+appear+to+challenge+you+in+the+arena. He was imperative that I keep them safe, frightened that he'd accidentally lose one during one of his runs up and back to the replica spaceship with the little fake steering wheel in it. Those dozen-plus plastic balls were, and still are, five-year-old Carson's prized possession. And that's no re-written press release, from me - I've seen it firsthand. Bakugan: Battle Brawlers is a massive hit with young boys across the country right now. And I'd just been entrusted with Carson's collection of Bakugans.

He pulled them all out, one by one, and it took him a good full minute to do so - then he smiled, then he ran off to go scramble through the plastic maze and race down the slide. He must have had 15 of them, all crammed into his little pockets.
